OSI SAF's latest news !
Dear OSI SAF users, colleagues and partners,

It is about time to give you some news from the OSI SAF team !

In this sixth newsletter, you'll find news about the latest visiting scientist of our wind team, who has been working on coastal winds detection. 2023 has been a particular year for Antarctic sea ice, in our stories, we tell you what our data says.

If you plan to attend the Liege Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics or the GHRSST International SST User's symposium in Montreal, take the chance to meet our participating team members. Check the stories for more information. Registration is open for both events !

Set-up of Pencil Beam Wind Processor (PenWP) for SeaWinds-derived coastal winds
In the context of the OSI SAF Visiting Scientist Activities, Giuseppe Grieco (ISMAR-CNR) worked on a procedure to mitigate land contamination of the Seawinds Pencil beam scatterometer's acquisitions. He managed to improve sampling rates within 10km of the coasts through applying noise regularisation. Check this story to learn more.

Antarctic Sea Ice through a low extent period

After setting new record-low sea-ice extent minima in February 2022 and February 2023, Antarctic sea ice coverage has remained remarkably low for the past 15 months. Concerns about a regime change have raised in the Antarctic Studies community. Learn more in this story.

On the left one is displayed the monthly average sea ice conctration as well as a line displaying the median sea-ice extent for september from 1981-2010. On the right is display a vizualisation of the sea ice concentration anomaly for the month.

What's up ?

We've been working on completing the scientific publication referring to our products. Don't hesitate to notify us with any recent publication citing our data, we'll be happy to share the references. Check out the list on our website.

Stay tuned !

Our WIND team is working hard. HY-2D winds are available both on FTP and EUMETCAST since November 2023, and Oceansat-3 Winds are now available on FTP as a demonstration product.
Our WIND team is progressing well on harmonisation of all wind products from HY-2B, HY-2C, HY-2D and Oceansat-3. The product harmonisation and improvements are in particular focussing on the calibration of the winds and on the quality control skill. An update of the existing products is to be expected in a couple of months.

OSI SAF has taken part in the last online training session of EUMETSAT Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications.
