Sea-Ice Concentration (AMSR3)
Operational Near real time productIce concentration is computed from atmospherically corrected AMSR3 brightness temperatures, using a combination of state-of-the-art algorithms. This product is the continuation of the AMSR2 product.
Identification
Acronym : GBL AMSR SICO
EUMETSAT collection ref. :
EO:EUM:DAT:1178
OSI SAF producer : Danish Meteorological Institute
Identifier : OSI-408-g
Id for archive (APNM) : OSICOAMSRGB
Characteristics
Processing level : L3
Satellite input : GOSAT-GW/AMSR3
Other input : NWP outputs
Temporal sampling : 1 per day
Central time : 12:00
Timeliness :
?
The timeliness is the time elapsing from the sensing time of the last contributing file to the product dissemination to users. It is similar to the latency.
5 h
Spatial coverage : Global
Spatial sampling : 10 km
Projection : polar stereographic
File Format(s) : NetCDF4
Characteristics & methods : The Level 3 AMSR Sea Ice Concentration consists of these major fields:
- Sea ice concentration. Indicates the fraction of a given ocean grid point covered by ice (daily averaged fractional ice cover in percentage).
- Uncertainties. The algorithm uncertainty, the smearing uncertainty and the resulting total uncertainty of each sea ice concentration grid cell.
- Confidence level. Based on the daily standard deviation within each grid cell, provided as a guide.

Accuracy Requirements
Target accuracy : 10 % for NH-product. 15 % for SH-product
Verification/validation method : Comparison with high spatial resolution manual ice charts (available between twice a week and once a week) : the performance shall be validated for only the “ice” and “water” cases, separately.
Applications and users
Usage : Climate models, NWP and Ocean/Ice models, operational Met and Sea Ice services.

New ticket helpdesk

OSI SAF has a commitment of operational continuity in our current (2022-2027) and next (2027-2032) phases.
See the page Implications of AMSR2 being replaced by AMSR3 on OSI SAF products.
The land mask for AMSR3 products is a bit less restrictive compared to the AMSR2 or SSMIS products in order to provide a better coverage e.g. inside fjords.
