Meteosat Sea Surface Temperature

Operational Near real time product

Level 3 hourly sub-skin Sea Surface Temperature derived from Meteosat at 0° longitude, covering 60S-60N and 60W-60E and re-projected on a 0.05° regular grid, in GHRSST compliant netCDF format.

Identification
Acronym : MET SST
Product navigator reference :

EO:EUM:DAT:METEOSAT:OSIHSST-NC

OSI SAF producer : Météo-France
Identifier : OSI-206-a
Digital object identifier (DOI) 10.15770/EUM_SAF_OSI_NRT_2014
Acronym for EDC (APNM) : MET SST, OSIHSST, OSIHSSTN
Citation : See at bottom
Characteristics
Processing level : L3C
Satellite input : Meteosat-10/SEVIRI
Other input : NWP outputs (temperature and humidity profiles, aerosols optical depth), Sea Surface Temperature analysis (OSTIA), cloud mask
Temporal sampling : 24 per day
Timeliness : ? The timeliness is the time elapsing from the sensing time of the last contributing file to the product dissemination to users. It is similar to the latency. 3h
Spatial coverage : East Atlantic, West Indian: 60N-60S 60W-60E
Spatial sampling : 0.05° Lat-Lon
Projection : cylindrical equidistant
File Formats : LML FTP Server (NetCDF4), EDC (NetCDF4), EUMETCast (NetCDF4)
Characteristics & methods : The satellite input data come from the imager SEVIRI on MSG satellites (Meteosat-11 then Meteosat-10). SST is retrieved from SEVIRI infrared channels (10.8 and 12.0 µm) using a multispectral algorithm and the cloud mask from NWC SAF.
Atmospheric profiles of water vapor and temperature from a numerical weather prediction model, Sea Surface Temperature from an analysis, together with a radiative transfer model, are used to correct the multispectral algorithm for regional and seasonal biases due to changing atmospheric conditions.
The quality of the products is monitored regularly by daily comparison of the satellite estimates against buoy measurements.
The product format is compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification (GDS) version 2. Users are advised to use data only with quality levels 3,4 and 5.

Detailed history :

The product series is operational since 2004:

  • version OSI-206 (Meteosat-8, Meteosat-9 and Meteosat-10) from 2004 to 20/02/2018
  • version OSI-206-a (Meteosat-11 until 21/03/2023, later on Meteosat-10) from 20/02/2018 onwards

From 20/02/2018, using cloud mask from NWC SAF software v2016.

From 19/01/2021, processed with a new chain: improved SST methodology, especially the bias correction parameterization, using cloud mask from NWC SAF software v2018
