Meteosat-10/Meteosat-11 swap operations planned on 21/03/2023

On the 21 March 2023, Meteosat-10 will replace Meteosat-11 as prime operational satellite in Meteosat 0° position.

The OSI SAF products using Meteosat 0° as input will evolve:

  • [OSI-206-a] Meteosat Sea Surface Temperature (hourly)
  • [OSI-303-a] and [OSI-304-a] Meteosat Downward Longwave Irradiance and Meteosat Surface Solar Irradiance (hourly)
  • [OSI-303-a] and [OSI-304-a] Meteosat Downward Longwave Irradiance and Meteosat Surface Solar Irradiance (daily)

On the 21 March 2023, during the swap operations, there will be no Meteosat data up to maximum 6 hours between 8:00 UTC and 14:00 UTC. The OSI SAF processing will be interrupted on this period and resumption of nominal products quality may take longer.

The products will keep the same OSI SAF identifiers but the switch implies some changes in the file names and metadata:

On the LML FTP server (hosted by Ifremer), these products are in the following directories:
/cersat-rt/project/osi-saf/data/sst/l3c/east_atlantic_west_indian/meteosat
/cersat-rt/project/osi-saf/data/radflux/l3/east_atlantic_west_indian/meteosat

The file names will change as follows: meteosat11 replaced by meteosat10, MSG4 replaced by MSG3.
20230321200000-OSISAF-L3C_GHRSST-SSTsubskin-SEVIRI_SST-ssteqc_meteosat10_20230321_200000-v02.0-fv01.0.nc
20230321200000-OSISAF-RADFLX-01H-MSG3.nc
20230321120000-OSISAF-RADFLX-24H-MSG3.nc

On EUMETCast and at EUMETSAT Data Centre, the file names will not change:
S-OSI_-FRA_-MSG_-H__SST_FIELD-201705170200Z.nc
S-OSI_-FRA_-MSG_-DLISSIH_____-201707050200Z.nc
S-OSI_-FRA_-MSG_-DLISSID_____-201707050200Z.nc

Concerning the metadata, the netCDF global attribute file_quality_level will be henceforth set to 0 (unknown quality) until the quality is assessed and validated by the OSI SAF team.

You can find more details in the product documentation available on the product pages:

  • [OSI-206-a] Meteosat Sea Surface Temperature (hourly)
  • [OSI-304-a] Meteosat Downward Longwave Irradiance (hourly and daily)
  • [OSI-304-a] Meteosat Surface Solar Irradiance (hourly and daily)
