The OSI SAF Sea Ice Index (SII), OSI-420, has been upgraded to version 2.2. The SII algorithms remain the same, but we change the source of the sea-ice concentration products used as input. Sea Ice Index v2.2 is computed from:
- Version 3.0 Sea Ice Concentration Climate Data Record (CDR), covering Oct 1978 to Dec 2020 (https://osi-saf.eumetsat.int/products/osi-450-a)
- Version 3.0 Sea Ice Concentration Interim Climate Data Record (ICDR), starting in Jan 2021 (https://osi-saf.eumetsat.int/products/osi-430-a);
The previous SII-v2.1 was based on v2.0 of Sea Ice Concentration (OSI-450 and OSI-430-b) that were recently deprecated.
Global, Hemispheric, and regional indexes
In the upgraded SII-v2.2, more regional indexes have been included:
- Global
- Northern Hemisphere
- Barents Sea
- Beaufort Sea
- Chukchi Sea
- East Siberian Sea
- Fram Strait (Greenland Sea)
- Kara Sea
- Laptev Sea
- Svalbard
- Southern Hemisphere
- Amundsen-Bellinghausen seas
- Indian Ocean
- Ross Sea
- Weddell Sea
- West Pacific Ocean

Interactive plotting
A new interactive plotting tool has been developed at MET Norway. Check this out and make your own personal graphics here
https://cryo.met.no/en/sea-ice-index
You can select between daily values “Interactive visualization - Daily” or monthly values “Interactive visualization - Monthly” in the left menu list.
All feedback on the new product and the visualization tool prototype is most welcome!
The production of SII-v2.1 will be switched off at the end of August 2023
Note, that for a shorter period of time, both the SII-v2.2 and the SII-v2.1 will be available in order for users to adjust to the new product. We plan to switch off the v2.1 production at the end of August 2023.
